1938 Evening Dress – Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel
Decoration of sequined fireworks on this evening dress that was worn by the Countess Madeleine de Montgomery Lady Mendl's seventy-fifth birthday, in 1939, is a fitting climax for Le Beau Monde, 1930.
When Adolf Hitler declared that Germany was at war with Poland in September 1939, the glamor was completed in 1930. Reason fireworks, executed in brilliantly colored sequins, takes on special symbolic importance as the dress has been worn out, and just before the start of World War II. Dress was part of a collection assembled and brought to New York financiers and their friends and in the exhibit to benefit charity French war in 1940.
